Gounod's Faust Returns to La Scala Using Bärenreiter's Critical Edition from the L’Opéra français Series
Oct. 28, 2026
Paul Prévost’s edition of Gounod’s Faust, published in the Bärenreiter series “L’Opéra français”, sets new standards. The edition is for the first time based on the previously unavailable composition autograph and the printed edition of 1860. Prévost has painstakingly detailed all the stages of work of the through-composed version which was performed for many decades at the Paris Opéra from 1869. Originally composed with spoken dialogues, Faust was premiered at the Théâtre-Lyrique in 1859. Gounod later reworked the opera into a version with composed recitatives – a version which did not take long to be regarded as Gounod’s world-famous major work.
Conductor Daniele Rustoni and director Johannes Erath are using the recitative version of the critical edition for their new production at La Scala Milan, which received its first performance on October 20. Future performances of this co-production will follow at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and the Teatro Real in Madrid.
