Georg Friedrich Haas in Portrait Event at the Austrian Cultural Forum

New York’s Austrian Cultural Forum presents a two-night portrait concert event celebrating the music of Georg Friedrich Haas as part of its “American Immersion” series. On February 24, the JACK Quartet performs Haas’s monumental evening-length In iij. Noct., his third string quartet. The piece marks a continuation of his experiments with unique lighting effects: in this case, music performed in complete darkness, with the musicians playing from memory in different parts of the performance space. 

On February 26, James Baker leads the Talea Ensemble at the Bohemian National Hall in a program featuring La profondeur for 13 players, tria ex uno for sextet, …wie stille brannte das Licht for soprano and chamber ensemble, and the US premieres of "I can’t breathe" for solo trumpet. Gareth Flowers (trumpet) and soprano Tony Arnold join as soloists.

Musica Nova, the resident contemporary ensemble of the Eastman School of Music directed by Brad Lubman, gives a performance of Haas’s masterpiece in vain for 24 instruments on February 15. in vain is among Haas’s most ambitious experiments with lighting; as the music unfolds, the intensity of the lighting responds, creating an immersive visual experience.
