Emory University Wind Ensemble Debuts Joseph Schwantner's <em>Luminosity</em>

On April 24, Dr. Nikk Pilato leads the Emory University Wind Ensemble in the world premiere of Luminosity, a new work by Joseph Schwantner commissioned by a consortium of university bands headed by the CBDNA (College Band Director’s National Association). The concert takes place at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Schwantner has written several works for wind ensemble and is widely recognized as a modern American master of the genre. His distinguished catalog of works for winds includes and the mountains rising nowhere (1977), From a Dark Millennium (1980), In evening’s stillness… (1996) and Recoil (2004); he describes Luminosity as his “latest and most ambitious work” in this series. Cast in three movements, Luminosity is bookended by material that exploits the wind, brass, and percussion sections, with a “mini-concerto for solo clarinet” at its center.

Luminosity is not the first collaborative effort between Schwantner and the Emory Wind Ensemble; in April 2007, Dr. Pilato transcribed New Morning for the World: “Daybreak of Freedom” for wind orchestra (originally scored for symphonic orchestra) and premiered the work with the Florida State University Wind Orchestra.
