Celebrating the Musical Heritage of Italian Cinema: The Films in Concert Project
Apr. 20, 2026
With a catalogue comprising over 2,000 original scores, CAM Sugar stands as the most extensive and representative collection of Italian film soundtracks. Founded in Rome in 1960 as Creazioni Artistiche Musicali, the company has played a pivotal role in shaping the musical identity of Italian cinema, contributing to more than 500 international awards, including the Academy Award for Best Original Score for Il Postino by Luis Bacalov.
Over the decades, CAM Sugar, now based in Milan has been home to some of the most distinguished collaborations in film history: Nino Rota for Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti, Giovanni Fusco for Michelangelo Antonioni, as well as the internationally acclaimed works of Riz Ortolani and Luis Bacalov. Its invaluable archive also preserves original master tapes by legendary composers such as Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Armando Trovajoli, Nicola Piovani, and many others.
In recent years, CAM Sugar has embarked on a remarkable journey to rediscover and celebrate this extraordinary archival heritage, with the aim of bringing the timeless music of Italian cinema to an ever-wider audience.
At the heart of this initiative lies Films in Concert, an ambitious project developed in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna, one of Europe’s most important film archive and cultural institution, internationally renowned for its work in film preservation and restoration, and promotion of cinematic heritage.

This unique series brings iconic films to the stage, accompanied by their original scores performed live by a full orchestra, faithfully recreating the way these soundtracks were originally heard on screen, with the addition of English subtitles to ensure accessibility for international audiences.
The project has already presented, for the first time ever, live performances of Amarcord by Federico Fellini and The Leopard(Il Gattopardo) by Luchino Visconti, both featuring the celebrated music of Nino Rota. The enthusiastic response from audiences has led to the expansion of the program, soon to include three additional masterpieces: La Dolce Vita and 8½, once again showcasing Rota’s iconic compositions, and Il Postino, with its Academy Award-winning score by Luis Bacalov.

What sets Films in Concert apart from other similar projects is the meticulous work behind the scenes. Thanks to exclusive access to original archival materials such as manuscript scores and historical recordings, it has been possible to reconstruct the scores with exceptional accuracy through a rigorous philological process.
At the same time, the Cineteca di Bologna has carried out a huge restoration project on both the film and the audio using the most advanced technologies available.
The result is an unprecedented artistic experience that offers audiences the rare opportunity to hear these masterpieces exactly as they were originally conceived.
Through projects such as this one, CAM Sugar continues to honour and revitalize the rich musical legacy of Italian cinema, ensuring that it resonates with contemporary audiences while preserving its authenticity for future generations.
