Bernard Rands Named Recipient of 2014 Order of Lincoln

Bernard Rands has been named a recipient of the 2014 Order of Lincoln by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois. Established in 1964 by Proclamation of Illinois Governor Otto Kerner, the Order of Lincoln honors individuals whose contributions to the betterment of humanity have brought honor to the state of Illinois and whose identity with and dedication to the principles of public service inspire all Illinoisans to respond to what Lincoln called 'the better angels of our nature.’ The award is declared each year to be the state’s highest award. Each honoree receives a warrant signed by the Governor and bearing the Great Seal of the State of Illinois, certifying his or her investiture as a Laureate of the Order of Lincoln. The award recipients are formally announced on February 12, Lincoln’s birthday, and the ceremony takes place May 3. Previous laureates include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks and former President Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Other events in Rands's performance calendar this month include Paula Holcomb conducting the SUNY Fredonia Wind Ensemble in Ceremonial on November 21. The work, composed in 1992 for H. Robert Reynolds and the University of Michigan Symphony Band, explores the landscape of colors that result from various combinations of wind instruments. Rands describes the work:

Ceremonial is a monothematic composition in which a single, extended melody is repeated ten times during the course of the work. The melody, first stated by a solo bassoon, is subsequently played by various combinations of instruments, always increasing in density and in complexity of timbre. This latter quality is the central concern of the work which employs unusual and unconventional mixtures of instrumental groups – sometimes in extreme registers – in order that the melody is continuously transformed.

We are also pleased to announce two new Bernard Rands publications: String Quartet No. 3, which was composed in 2004, as well as a newly engraved and corrected edition of In the Receding Mist, for flute, harp, violin, viola and cello.
