Arvo Pärt in Portrait at the Los Angeles Philharmonic; World Premiere of Greater Antiphons

The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents a focus on Arvo Pärt this month with several concerts dedicated to his works.

The first, on May 11, pairs works by the Estonian master alongside music by George Frideric Händel, including Pärt’s Summa, Vater Unser and Es sang vor langen Jahren. The concert features performances by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, led by Nicholas McGegan, along with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and countertenor Andreas Scholl.

Following that, the Los Angeles Philharmonic presents a three-part series pairing the work of Pärt with the music of Mozart. The series includes performances of Pärt’s Miserere (May 19-22), with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Latvian Radio Choir and Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir led by Gustavo Dudamel, as well as Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten and Symphony No. 4 “Los Angeles” (May 26, 27). On May 28, Dudamel leads the orchestra in the world premiere of a new work for string orchestra by Arvo Pärt—Greater Antiphons—commissioned for the occasion.

The orchestra’s final Pärt focus event—a recital with organists Aaron David Miller and Damin Spritzer—takes place on May 29. The program features several organ works by Pärt, including Trivium, Annum per annum and Spiegel Im Spiegel
