Alarm Will Sound and New York University Symphony Premiere Works by Valgeir Sigurðsson

Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson receives two major premieres in the United States this month, with the world premiere of Veej, for chamber ensemble, and the US premiere of Dreamland, for orchestra and electronics.

Alarm Will Sound gives the world premiere of Veej on May 28 at The Sheldon in St. Louis, Missouri. The work, scored for a mixed chamber ensemble of 18 players, is the result of a collaboration between the composer and Alarm Will Sound member Chris Thompson. Sigurðsson explains:

Veej was created from a 15-measure long sequence of MIDI information, the same exact data feeding multiple times into various synthesizers and signal processes, resulting in a collection of audio-cells, or stems. These cells got sequenced and combined to form the initial sketch of the piece. I sent the raw material to Chris Thompson, who mapped out the structure and meticulously transcribed each cell for a combination of instruments we felt might represent it acoustically.

On May 8, the New York University Symphony gives the US premiere of Sigurðsson’s Dreamland at Symphony Space in New York City. Sigurðsson composed Dreamland in 2009 as the score for Andri Snær Magnason's political documentary of the same name. The US premiere features live projection of the film alongside the orchestra's performance, conducted by Andrew Cyr.
