Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra present three concert performances this month of Alban Berg’s operatic masterpiece Wozzeck as an integral part of the orchestra’s US tour. Two performances take place in California at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall on November 10 and 13 featuring Johan Reuter in the title role, with Angela Denoke as Marie, Hubert Francis as the Drum Major, Joshua Ellicott as Andres, and Peter Hoare as the Doctor. The tour concludes at Avery Fisher Hall in New York on November 19 with Simon Keenlyside taking over as the tragic lead.

Based on Georg Büchner’s dramatic play Wozzeck, which was left incomplete at the time of the author’s death, Berg’s opera is a direct and passionate commentary on social themes of poverty, morality and social class. Berg began composing the opera in 1914 after attending the play’s first production, yet did not complete it until 1922. Its premiere was given by the Berlin State Opera in 1925 and the opera has since become one of the composer’s most successful and beloved works as well as one of the great masterpieces of 20th-century music.
