Dmitri Shostakovich's <em>The Nose</em> Returns to The Metropolitan Opera

Valery Gergiev has returned to The Metropolitan Opera to conduct the highly anticipated revival of William Kentridge’s critically acclaimed production of Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Nose. The production opened on October 8 and features Andrey Popov as the Police Inspector, Alexander Lewis as The Nose, and Paulo Szot as Kovalyov. The 2010 Metropolitan Opera premiere of Kentridge's production was a smashing success and featured a lauded debut by Szot with Gergiev leading the orchestra.

“Valery Gergiev is a master of this score,” hailed the New York Times, “and the Met Orchestra responded eagerly to his ministrations, reveling in the young Shostakovich’s brash strokes.”

The Nose is an absurdist drama in three acts, based on a short story by Nikolai Gogol. The work is a sharp satire of Russian society that follows the misadventures of Kovalyov, a bureaucrat who wakes to find that his nose has disappeared.

The Nose is a co-production of The Metropolitan Opera, the Festival d’Aix en Provence, and the Opéra National de Lyon. Additional performances at the Met take place October 12, 17, 22 and 26.
