Katharina Rosenberger and Ken Ueno Join PSNY

Project Schott New York is pleased to announce two new composers to their roster: Katharina Rosenberger and Ken Ueno. Rosenberger, who was born in Zurich, holds a Masters of Music from the Royal Academy of Music in London and a Doctor of Music Arts in composition from Columbia University. She currently is an Assistant Professor in Composition at the University of California, San Diego, where she teaches alongside fellow composer Lei Liang. Rosenberger writes,

Much of my work manifests in an interdisciplinary context and is bound to confront traditional performance practice in terms of how sound is produced, heard and seen. Taking the audience to peculiar places, ambiguous and deceiving, where the usual expectations have to be thrown overboard. Often the instrumentalists are challenged to go beyond an "only" interpretative function, their corporal presence on stage is fully taken into account.

Rosenberger’s first work with PSNY is scatter 2.0, for ensemble. A recording will be released on HatHut records in the spring. Check it out on PSNY here.

Ken Ueno is a composer, vocalist, improviser, and cross-disciplinary artist. His music coalesces diverse influences into a democratic sonic landscape. The composer's website states:

In addition to Heavy Metal sub-tone singing and Tuvan throat singing, he is also informed by European avant-garde instrumental techniques, American experimentalism, and sawari or beautiful noise, an aesthetic in traditional Japanese music. Ken’s artistic mission is to champion sounds that have been overlooked or denied so that audiences reevaluate their musical potential. The music pushes the boundaries of perception and challenges traditional paradigms of beauty.

Ken is an associate professor of composition at the University of California, Berkeley. His first work with PSNY, ...blood blossoms..., is for amplified ensemble, and takes its inspiration from William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch.
