International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) Presents Matthias Pintscher Portrait

The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) presents a portrait concert of composer Matthias Pintscher on December 13, 2012 at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. One of the most accomplished composers of his generation, Pintscher has recently been appointed Music Director of the renowned Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris.

ICE’s portrait concert features some of Pintscher’s most intimate chamber works: On A Clear Day for solo piano, Study II for Treatise on the Veil for violin, viola and cello, and Study III for Treatise on the Veil for solo violin. On A Clear Day is a virtuosic work for solo piano that was premiered by Mitsuko Uchida. Study II and III for Treatise on the Veil were inspired by the work of American abstractionist Cy Twombly. Pintscher describes his “Treatise on the Veil” series as an homage to the artist, an attempt to translate the pictures, lines, and perspectives of Twombly’s “Studies for the Treatise on the Veil” into sound. In addition, accordion virtuoso William Schimmel will join ICE to perform the colorful duo dernier espace avec introspecteur, for accordion and cello.

Elsewhere this month, Pintscher pays a visit to Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music to lead a performance of his Verzeichnete Spur, for ensemble and live electronics, with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra on December 7.
