Huw Watkins’ <em>In the Locked Room</em> Debuts with Music Theatre Wales at Edinburgh Festival

On August 30th, the 2012 Edinburgh International Festival hosts the world premiere of Huw Watkins' new opera In the Locked Room. Presented by Music Theatre Wales and featuring stage direction by Michael McCarthy, the one-act chamber opera is a co-commission and co-production with the Scottish Opera. Based on a Thomas Hardy short story, In the Locked Room features a libretto by award-winning poet David Harsent. The story begins with a closed door that sparks an obsession so strong that the boundaries between reality and fantasy begin to blur. Michael Rafferty leads the cast of four singers through an exploration of the power of creativity and imagination, and the overwhelming power of memories.

After the premiere, In the Locked Room begins a four-month, six-city tour through Scotland, England and Wales.
