"Huw Watkins Day" at Wigmore Hall
Jan. 31, 2013

London’s Wigmore Hall presents "Huw Watkins Day" on February 9. Sought-after composer, pianist, and chamber musician, Huw Watkins is a gifted communicator whose music has been known to draw an audience to the edge of their seats. Watkins enjoys a long-standing relationship with Wigmore Hall, the location of many of the composer’s chamber premieres over the past several years, and the fruitful partnership continues with this day-long, mini-festival featuring three concerts and a composer chat hosted by well-known music critic Tom Service.
Watkins is joined in concert by several collaborators, including flutist Emily Beynon, clarinetist Matthew Hunt, soprano Carolyn Sampson, violinist Alina Ibragimova, tenor Mark Padmore, and cellist Guy Johnston, along with the Aronowitz Ensemble and the Elias String Quartet. The festival offers a fantastic survey of the composer’s chamber oeuvre that includes ensemble works (Sad Steps, Gig, Piano Trio, In my craft or sullen art), solo pieces (Four Spencer Pieces, Partita), songs (Five Larkin Songs) and more.
The following day, Watkins returns to Wigmore to join his brother, cellist Paul Watkins, for the world premiere of Blue Shadows Fall for cello and piano. Blue Shadows Fall is co-commissioned by Wigmore Hall with the support of André Hoffmann, President of the Fondation Hoffmann, a Swiss grant making foundation and by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center funded by a generous grant from Linda and Stuart Nelson in honor of Wu Han and David Finckel, and receives its US premiere in the 2013-14 season.
