Georg Friedrich Haas Awarded Salzburg Music Prize; <em>Monodie</em> in US Premiere

Georg Friedrich Haas has been awarded the 2013 Salzburg Music Prize – an international composition prize awarded by the Salzburg regional government. A laureate concert and official awards ceremony took place during the Salzburg Biennale on March 3 at the Mozarteum Foundation. The concert, featuring the ensemble ‘oenm’ (Austrian Ensemble for New Music) with soprano Sarah Wegener and conductor Michel Galante, included performances of Hass’ …wie stille brannte das Licht and tria ex uno. Previous recipients of the Salzburg Music Prize are Salvatore Sciarrino, Klaus Huber, and Friedrich Cerha. 

The Salzburg Prize jury offered the following statement:

Today, at age 59, Georg Friedrich Haas counts as one of the unique personae among contemporary composers. During his decades of work, he has developed an outstanding artistic autonomy, independent of all compositional fashions – humanly quiet and artistically unswerving on his way.

Additionally this month, DePaul University’s Ensemble 20+ performs an all-Haas program led by Michael Lewanski. The program takes place at DePaul on March 7 and features the US Premiere of Haas’ Monodie as well as performances of AUS.WEG, for mixed octet,and La profondeur, for chamber ensemble. Monodie, scored for 18 instruments, was commissioned in 1999 by the Music Biennale Berlin and premiered by Peter Rundel and the Ensemble Modern. The title, which translates from Greek as “single song”, is supported by Haas’ score, which focuses the ensemble into a virtual solo instrument.
