Edmonton Symphony Premieres David Matthews’ Fantasy on themes from Swan Lake
Mar. 04, 2013

On March 7, The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra premieres David Matthews’ Fantasy on themes from Swan Lake, headlining the ESO program “The Russian Soul.” Conducted by Case Scaglione, the program offers an extensive survey of Russian classical music from Tchaikovsky to Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff and more. The performance of Fantasy features ESO interim concertmaster Eric Buchmann as solo violinist.
David Matthews celebrates Tchaikovsky’s contribution to the world of ballet with a new work that reimagines themes from the masterwork Swan Lake. The composer acknowledges the celebrity of the original score by using solo violin and orchestra to bring some of its most famous moments and melodies to life. Matthews speaks on arranging the piece:
The opening is the Pas d'action from Act 2, which contains the famous, immediately recognizable solo violin line. This is followed by a six-bar link to an adaption of the entrance of the swans from Act 1, followed by another link to the brief finale which is the coda to the Pas d'action. I transposed the coda from E flat to D to facilitate a better key for the solo violin along with the addition of some extra virtuoso flourishes.
The concert takes place in Edmonton, Alberta at the Winspear Centre’s Enmax Hall. For more information on the performance, visit www.edmontonsymphony.com.
