Bernard Rands’ <em>Ceremonial</em> for Wind Ensemble in Multiple Performances; 80th Birthday Year in 2014!

Bernard Rands marks his 80th birthday in May of 2014 and we invite you to help us celebrate the master American composer by programming works from his rich catalogue of music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and the stage on your performance seasons throughout 2013 and 2014. In addition to his orchestral and chamber music output, Bernard Rands has also made prominent contributions to the wind ensemble genre. His Ceremonial for symphonic wind ensemble, composed in 1992, sees performances at the University of Missouri-Kansas City led by Steven D. Davis on September 18. Ceremonial is a fascinating exploration of the multiple combinations of wind instruments and resulting colors possible within the wind band context. A single melodic theme is repeated ten times throughout the course of the work subsequently played by different combinations of instruments, always increasing in density and in complexity of timbre.

The Boston Globe remarked following a past performance, “Ceremonial made the strongest impression, an example of minimalism at its most emotionally resonant and generous minded. Its atmosphere is strong and dark and its orchestration shows the hand of a master.”

Ceremonial is also scheduled for performances at the University of Maryland on November 2 and the Boston Conservatory on April 5, in addition to the performance in Kansas City. The work continues to garner praise as an exciting and unique offering for adventurous wind ensembles.
