Alexander Goehr’s 80th Birthday Celebration Continues with Premiere of <em>Largo Siciliano</em>

The summer of Alexander Goehr’s 80th birthday year features several festival performances and a world premiere in celebration of “Sandy.” On July 5, the Nash Ensemble presented the first performance of Goehr's new horn trio Largo Siciliano at the Cheltenham Festival. Commissioned by the ensemble, the 15-minute work takes its cue from the music of Goehr's teacher Olivier Messiaen, and is written for the same combination of forces that Brahms first wrote for in 1865 – horn, violin and piano.

In August, Goehr's music is also featured at this year's BBC Proms. On the 18th, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, conducted by Nicholas Collon, performs … a musical offering (J.S.B. 1985) …, the composer's study on Bach's compositional techniques. August 25th brings the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s concert of Metamorphosis/Dance, led by Oliver Knussen. Metamorphosis/Dance is a set of variations which Goehr calls "an imaginary ballet," and draws its inspiration from Homer's Odyssey.
