2017 Summer Festival Digest

After another brilliant concert season, musicians and music lovers reconvene at summer festivals throughout the world. This year’s festival line-up includes many exciting events – from Lincoln Center Festival's premiere of Morton Subotnick's Crowds and Power and the 50th anniversary celebration of Silver Apples of the Moon, to premieres by Hannah Lash, Luke Bedford, Julian Anderson, Gerald Barry and Tom Coult, as well as new productions of Aribert Reimann's Lear and George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess.

Aspen Music Festival
The 69th Aspen Music Festival features the US concert premiere of Luke Bedford's timely chamber opera Seven Angels as well as performances of works by Oliver Knussen, Andrew Norman, Hannah Lash, and Anders HillborgRead more. 

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra hosts Polish composer and soprano Agata Zubel for a series of performances as part of the orchestra's 2017 New Music Festival. Read more.

BBC Proms
The 2017 BBC Proms includes the world premieres of Julian Anderson's piano concerto The Imaginary Museum, Gerald Barry's Canada for voice and orchestra, and Tom Coult's new orchestral work St John's Dance, as well as music by Anders Hillborg, Thomas Larcher, Francisco Coll, Thomas Adès, David Sawer, Wolfgang Rihm and more. Read more. 

Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music
On August 11, the US premiere of Gerald Barry's Piano Concerto takes place at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, led by Music Director Cristian Măcelaru and with soloist Jason Hardink. Read more.

Chamber Music Northwest
Hannah Lash's Form and Postlude, for flute, clarinet, harp and string quartet, receives its world premiere performance on July 13 as part of the Chamber Music Northwest Summer Festival in Portland, OR. Read more.

Glimmerglass Festival

From July 7 to August 21, the Glimmerglass Festival mounts a new production of George Gershwin's beloved opera Porgy and Bess. John DeMain conducts with direction by Francesca Zambello. Read more.

Grant Park Music Festival

On July 14 and 15, Matthew Hindson's Headbanger receives its US premiere in Chicago at the Grant Park Music Festival. Read more.

Lincoln Center Festival
In celebrating the monumental career of composer and electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, Lincoln Center Festival presents a three-night series of live performances of his seminal Silver Apples of the Moon, which was released exactly 50 years ago by Nonesuch Records, along with the world premiere of a new multi-media tone poem, Crowds and Power, for voice, electronic sound and live imagery. Read more.

Lucerne Festival

This year's Lucerne Festival highlights the music of Heinz Holliger and György Ligeti with performances of numerous major works by the composers throughout the season, including Holliger's monumental Violin Concerto with Patricia Kopatchinskaja and a production of Ligeti's Le Grand MacabreRead more.

Salzburg Festival
The Salzburg Festival presents Aribert Reimann's opera Lear in a new production from August 20 to 29, starring baritone Gerald Finley as King Lear. Franz Welser-Möst leads the Vienna Philharmonic with stage direction by Simon Stone. Read more.

Tanglewood Music Festival
The Tanglewood Music Festival features performances of Vijay Iyer's new violin concerto Trouble, Julian Anderson's Incantesimi, Thomas Adès's Polaris, and Mark-Anthony Turnage's Dispelling the Fears, while the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music includes works by Lei Liang, Anthony Cheung and György Ligeti, among many others. Read more.
