Hannah Lash's Form and Postlude Debuts at Chamber Music Northwest

Hannah Lash’s Form and Postlude, for flute, clarinet, harp and string quartet, receives its world premiere performance on July 13 as part of the Chamber Music Northwest Summer Festival. The performance takes place at Reed College’s Kaul Auditorium in Portland, OR, with an ensemble featuring clarinetist David Shifrin, flutist Joana Wu, violinists Rebecca Anderson and Emily Bruskin, violist Nokuthula Ngwenyama, cellist Julia Bruskin and Lash as harpist.

The title and instrumentation of Lash’s Form and Postlude is a nod to Ravel’s Introduction et Allegro (also featured on the program), though Lash’s work “lives in its own very distinct space apart from Ravel,” according to the composer. Explaining the style of her piece, Lash mentions:

I play throughout with the idea of pacing on many levels: the largest level is the idea of proportion of sections to one another, then harmonic rhythm (in the broad sense), then harmonic rhythm on a more local level, and of course then on the surface of the music there is instrumental texture and how fast the notes go by.
