World Staged Premiere of Peter Eötvös's Senza Sangue at Festival d’Avignon

On May 15 and 17, the Festival d’Avignon presents the world staged premiere of Peter Eötvös’s one-act opera Senza Sangue. The production is paired with Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle and features direction by Róbert Alföldi with Eötvös leading the Orchestre Region Avignon-Provence. Mezzo-soprano Albane Carrère and baritone Romain Bockler star in the opera’s two opposing roles.

Senza sangue was jointly commissioned by The Cologne Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Eötvös composed the opera, after the eponymous novel by Italian writer Alessandro Baricco, as a one-act pairing for Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle. Mari Mezei’s libretto, based on the concluding section of the novel, tells the story of a girl whose family was murdered at the hands of a young man and his companions in the midst of a civil war. The opera’s narrative spans a lifetime, from the scene of the murder to the encounter between the woman and the assailant many decades later. A complex story unfolds that raises questions about faith, revenge, and the discovery of a meaningful life after trauma.

Following its production at Festival d’Avignon, Senza Sangue receives further staged performances at the Armel Opera Festival in Budapest (June 27), the Hamburg Staatsoper (November 6-30) and in concert with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (March 10, 2017).
