World Premiere of Victoria Borisova-Ollas's Beyond All Happiness and Joy

Oct. 18, 2025

For many composers, writing for their own instrument is a delight. For Victoria Borisova-Ollas, the piano has been a lifelong companion, and now, for the first time, she has composed a concerto for piano and orchestra titled Beyond All Happiness and Joy. Under the baton of Johannes Gustavsson, pianist Peter Jablonski and the Jönköpings Sinfonietta premiered this vibrant new work on October 5. Written to shine with energy and light, this music uplifts and inspires. The composer explains:

"Writing for an instrument that you play yourself is a rare joy for any composer. For me, the piano has been a constant companion since the age of six. Nowadays, I don't play it very often myself, but it is almost always included in the list of instruments for the works I write. It is always included in my orchestral and chamber scores, and there are even two piano soloists in the work Wunderbare Leiden, which was commissioned by the Tonhalle Orchestra in Düsseldorf to celebrate Robert Schumann's 200th anniversary. But until recently, I never had the opportunity to write a proper solo concerto.

When I received a request from the brilliant Swedish pianist Peter Jablonski, I was really happy. Then Jönköping Sinfonietta came up with a proposal for the commission, and it was time to get to work. The concerto was composed during the fall of 2024 and early 2025. Despite the season outside my window in Stockholm, I tried to keep the cold and darkness out of my score. The intention was to create music that would sparkle with joy and energy. I hope I have succeeded in this task."
