World Premiere of Thomas Larcher’s <em>lucid dreams</em> with Belcea Quartet

On December 2, the Belcea Quartet performs the world premiere of lucid dreams, the fourth string quartet of Austrian composer Thomas Larcher. The concert takes place at the Maison de la Culture in Grenoble, France, followed by performances in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom throughout December. This is the second collaboration between Larcher and the Belcea Quartet, who premiered his Piano Quintet in November of 2012 at Wigmore Hall.

Larcher's lucid dreams marks a return to classical form for the composer, who takes inspiration from the restrictions naturally imposed from the quartet's instrumentation. As in a classical quartet, there are four movements in the form of fast-slow-scherzo-finale. In contrast to his previous quartet Madhares, Larcher adheres largely to the use of conventional playing techniques.

The title is derived from the bright and colorful second movement, inspired by stained glass church windows. The outer movements are defined by a rich darkness, bringing a wide spectrum of luminosity to the work as a whole.
