World Premiere of Thierry Pécou's Until the Lions at Opéra National du Rhin

Mar. 01, 2020

From March 21-April 7, the Opéra National du Rhin gives the world premiere performances of Thierry Pécou’s opera, Until the Lions, based on the 2017 book of the same name by the Indian author Karthika Nair. Marie Jacquot conducts the performance, with stage direction and choreography by Shobana Jeyasingh and set design and costumes by Merle Hensel. Thierry Pécou describes his new work:

“Until the Lions is the beginning of an African proverb: until the lions can write their own story, only the hunters will become famous. In her book, Karthika Nair gives a voice to some of the so-called minor characters of the Mahabharata, those who have suffered the most from disasters caused by the male abuse of power and war.”

A fascinating interview with the composer about the inspiration behind this work is included in the current edition of Schott Journal (click here).
