World Premiere of Stewart Wallace's Hat Trunk at The University of Texas at Austin

Stewart Wallace’s Hat Trunk, a colorful arrangement of songs from Wallace’s opera, Hopper’s Wife, receives its world premiere this month at the The University of Texas at Austin's Butler School of Music. The concert takes place at the University's Bates Recital Hall on April 25, with Dan Welcher leading the University’s New Music Ensemble.

Scored for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, Hat Trunk is a cycle of four songs from the second scene of Hopper’s Wife, which tells the history of an imagined relationship between American scene painter Edward Hopper and Hollywood gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. Each song, Automat, Summertime, The Sea Watchers, and Girlie Show, is inspired by a Hopper painting and includes a specific hat which Mrs. Hopper posed with for the painting. After Long Beach Opera’s premiere of Hopper’s Wife, Mark Swed for the Los Angeles Times noted the piece as “brave, bold and important.” Hat Trunk is sure to be a favorite with singers, ensembles and audiences alike.
