Shin-ichiro Ikebe's <em>Piano Concerto No. 3</em> Receives World Premiere

This month, renowned pianist Izumi Tateno performs the world premiere of Shin-ichiro Ikebe’s Piano Concerto No. 3 “To a West Wind” for left hand piano and orchestra, accompanied by La Tempesta Chamber Orchestra and led by conductor Yukihiro Notsu. The premiere performance takes place on November 3 at the Minamisoma Civic Center in Fukushima, Japan, with additional performances on November 6, 8 and 10 in Yamagata, Osaka and Tokyo respectively.

After suffering a stroke in 2002, Tateno has championed the repertoire for left hand piano and has commissioned and premiered countless new works. Ikebe’s Piano Concerto No. 3 was written for Tateno as part of the 2013 Izumi Tateno Festival. The work is one of many orchestral pieces by Ikebe to receive its premiere this year in honor of the composer’s 70th birthday. Recent premieres of Ikebe’s orchestral works include Symphony VIII “The Earth/Prayer”, Mou Hitotsu (One More), To the Landscape of My Origin as well as his Symphony IX for soprano, baritone and orchestra with text by Hiroshi Osada. 

On November 17, the 2013 Kitakyusyu International Music Festival presents Ikebe in a lecture concert at Hibiki Hall in Kitakyusyu, Japan, featuring a performance of Ikebe’s A Guitar Bears, and Keeps Hoping with guitarist Daisuke Suzuki.
