World Premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth's Études-Tableaux with The Cleveland Orchestra
Jan. 07, 2015

On January 16, conductor Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in the world premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth’s Études-Tableaux. The work is the result of Wigglesworth’s second year in residence with the orchestra as the Daniel R. Lewis Young Composer Fellow.
Études-Tableaux is inspired by one of Wigglesworth’s earlier pieces, a process the composer describes as “an act of interpretation.” The pre-existing musical fragments act as a framework for his new tableaux, though the original material is undetectable in the finished work. Last season, The Cleveland Orchestra delivered the US premiere of Wigglesworth’s Locke’s Theatre, an orchestral work in three short movements based on Matthew Locke’s incidental music written for Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
Following the world premiere performances on January 16 and 17, Études-Tableaux receives its European premiere on February 6 at London’s Barbican Hall featuring the composer himself conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
