World Premiere of Rodion Shchedrin's A Christmas Tale at Mariinsky Theater

The Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg is set to present the world premiere of A Christmas Tale, a fantastic new fairy tale opera by Rodion Shchedrin. Valery Gergiev leads the performance, which opens on December 26 with direction by Alexey Stepanyuk and stage design by Alexander Orlov.

Božena Nemtsova is one of the foremost Czech authors of the 19th century and among the greatest storytellers, particularly of fairy tales. Nemtsova’s The Twelve Months, translated by Nikolai Leskov, provides the basis for Rodion Shchedrin’s A Christmas Tale. With traces of familiar fairy tales such as Cinderella and Snow White, the story tells of a beautiful, hardworking but unloved stepdaughter and her search for a violet in the snow. Ultimately she receives help from the months of the year and her kindheartedness is rewarded.
