World Premiere of Pierre Jalbert's Howl with Charles Neidich and the Pro Arte Quartet

On September 26, clarinetist Charles Neidich joins the Pro Arte Quartet for the world premiere of Pierre Jalbert’s Howl. Commissioned in celebration of the Pro Arte Quartet’s centennial season, the quintet is the final work in the ensemble’s anniversary commissioning series, and is the highlight of Pro Arte’s opening night program in its newly renovated home – the Union Theater at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jalbert shares some thoughts about his new chamber piece.

Howl is in three movements and was somewhat inspired by the poem of Allen Ginsberg, not so much the content, but the long lyrical line created in the work. This long line is recreated by the clarinet with the strings providing an active underpinning. [Ginsberg’s] poem has been referred to as a kind of ‘litany of praise’ and the second movement becomes the litany, with the clarinet acting as ‘Vox Dei,’ the voice of God. The third movement returns to the musical subject matter of the first — this time with the bass clarinet taking on the virtuosic role.

Also this month, conductor Anne Manson leads the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Autumn Rhapsody. The performance takes place on September 16 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
