World Premiere of Pierre Jalbert's <em>String Quartet No. 6 "Canticle"</em> with Chiara String Quartet

Pierre Jalbert's String Quartet No. 6 "Canticle" receives its world premiere performance by the Chiara String Quartet at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on February 1. The work was commissioned for the Chiara String Quartet by The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska and its Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The work, in seven movements, requires the musicians to perform additional percussion instruments on and away from their string instruments. Jalbert elaborates:

The piece opens with the quartet members striking various crotales, producing bell sounds that eventually blend with the string quartet – evoking the title, Canticle. The faster, pulse-oriented music requires the players to use glass rods on their instruments and at one point quickly moves back and forth between alternating rhythmic subdivisions, producing extremely rapid metric modulations. The last movement blends the string quartet with the bowing of the crotales to produce an ethereal, other-worldly finale to the canticle.   

The Chiara String Quartet is an exciting young ensemble that has been praised for its “highly virtuosic, edge-of-the-seat playing” (The Boston Globe). Following the premiere, the ensemble performs Canticle again on February 9 at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT and on May 11 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
