World Premiere of Peter Eötvös's Multiversum with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Oct. 01, 2017
On October 10, Peter Eötvös leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the world premiere of his expansive new concerto for organ, Hammond organ and orchestra, Multiversum. Soloists Iveta Apkalna (organ) and László Fassang (Hammond organ) join the orchestra in the performance at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
Consisting of three movements—Expansion, Multiversum and Time and Space—Eötvös specifies for his Multiversum to be performed with the musicians surrounding the audience, enveloping the listener in sound from all sides. The work, written in memoriam to Pierre Boulez, was jointly commissioned by the Elbphilharmonie, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Kölner Philharmonie, Center for Fine Arts (BOZAR) Brussels, MÜPA Budapest, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Philharmonie de Paris, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Southbank Centre in collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Following the premiere, Eötvös leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a tour of performances in Köln (October 11), Brussels (October 12), Budapest (October 14), and Amsterdam (October 19, 20), as well as performances with the hr-Sinfonieorchester in Frankfurt (December 7, 8).
Also this month, Music Theatre Wales takes Eötvös’s recent chamber opera The Golden Dragon on tour with performances throughout the UK. Michael McCarthy directs the production with Geoffrey Patterson conducting.
