World Premiere of Olli Mustonen's <em>Sonata for Violin and Orchestra</em> with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

On April 9, Finnish composer Ollie Mustonen heads “down under” as he conducts the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of his Sonata for Violin and Orchestra, featuring soloist Kristian Winther. Commissioned by the orchestra, the premiere is a highlight of the 2014 Metropolis New Music Festival, where Mustonen is featured as conductor, pianist and composer.

Mustonen shares some insight into his new work:

My Sonata for Violin and Orchestra consists of three movements. The first movement (Grave) is serious and monumental in character. The second movement (Allegretto) brings in some totally different kind of music: irregular rhythmic impulses in the orchestra and fanfare-like, vigorous and joyous motives in the violin. The last movement starts attacca with colossal chords in the orchestra combining the tonalities of C-sharp minor and C major.

The performance takes place at Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre and also features the Australian premiere of Rodion Shchedrin’s “Sotto voce Concerto” for cello and orchestra, with soloist Marko Ylönen.

Also this month, Mustonen leads the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the Australian premieres of his Sinfonia 1 for baritone and orchestra on April 5 and Concert Champêtre “Erkyläläinen konsertto” on April 12.
