World Premiere of New Critical Edition of Francesco Cavalli's Il Xerse at Opéra de Lille

This month, Opéra de Lille presents the first performance of the new critical edition of Franceso Cavalli’s Il Xerse, with ballet music of Jean-Baptiste Lully, published as part of Bärenreiter’s Opere di Francesco Cavalli Edition. Emmanuelle Haim leads Le Concert d’Astrée in the production, with directon by Guy Cassiers, choreography by Maud le Plade and a cast including Ugo Guagliardo as Xerse, Tim Mead as Arsamene, Carlo Allemano as Ariodate, Emöke Barath as Romilda and Camille Poul as Adelanta.

Following Opéra de Lille’s production, which runs October 2 through October 10, Haim leads the ensemble in a concert performance at Theater an der Wien on October 18, and Opéra de Caen re-mounts the production on January 10 and 12, 2016.

Cavalli’s stage works have seen a renewed interest in recent years, partly due to revived interest in those of his predecessor Claudio Monteverdi. Easily the most prolific and significant opera composer of the seventeenth century, Cavalli’s works set the stage for the subsequent development of opera as a genre.

The new Opere di Francesco Cavalli critical edition fills the need for reliable source-based editions as well as dependable performance materials for Cavalli’s stage works. Designed for both scholars and performers alike, it aims to encourage productions of operas that have not been resurrected in modern times.
