World Premiere of Matthias Pintscher's <em>idyll</em> with The Cleveland Orchestra

On October 9, Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in the world premiere of Matthias Pintscher’s idyll at Severance Hall. 

The genesis of idyll began with Pintscher’s solo piano piece, on a clear day, written for the 80th birthday of a friend and mentor. When this friend passed away, Pintscher set out to compose a sort of “tombeau”, extrapolating ideas from the piano work to an orchestral setting: 

The piece is about the breathing of resonances, about fading away – with the whole sense of longing associated with this. Each sound dies away because it is dependent upon the breath, and then you have to breathe in anew. 

For idyll, Pintscher takes full advantage of the size and power of the historic Cleveland Orchestra, scoring for large sections of winds, brass, and strings, along with two harps and a substantial battery of percussion distributed among five players. Pintscher describes the result as “a music of great brightness and lightness… supported by perspective and hope. As in a dream of being a bird or being weightless, it is about a longing for lightness, about visions of light, inspiration and clear forms.” 

idyll was jointly commissioned by The Cleveland Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Welser-Möst conducts subsequent performances in Cleveland on October 10 and 12, as well as the European premiere with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks on October 30 and 31. The Australian premiere takes place on May 22 and 23, 2015 with Pintscher conducting the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
