World Premiere of Luke Bedford's Through His Teeth at the Royal Opera House

The world premiere of Luke Bedford’s chamber opera, Through His Teeth, takes place on April 3 with Sian Edwards leading the Chroma Ensemble. With a libretto by David Harrower, the opera was commissioned as part of the Royal Opera House’s program, “A Faustian Pack,” which explores artists' continued fascination with the Faust legend. The premiere takes place at the Linbury Studio Theatre of the Royal Opera House in London.

Scored for three singers and eight musicians, Through His Teeth tells the true account of a con man who seduced and controlled several women over the period of ten years. Bedford describes the impetus for the work:

A sort of traditional telling of the Faust stories has been done so many times that we were quite unsure about what we could add to that. So we knew that we had to find our own take on that, a different way of doing it. If you don’t think that we have a soul that you can sell, what is the sort of modern equivalent for that?

Universal Edition has documented the development of Through His Teeth through a unique and fascinating blog series, chronicling everything from the composition and workshop of the music and libretto, to the production and delivery of the performance material to the musicians.
