World Premiere of Huw Watkins's Four Fables

Jul. 10, 2018

World Premiere of Huw Watkins's Four Fables

On July 31, the Gould Piano Trio and clarinetist Robert Plane perform the world premiere of Four Fables by Huw Watkins at the Holy Trinity Church in Hereford as part of the Three Choirs Festival. Subsequent performances of the work take place on August 5 at the Corbridge Chamber Music Festival, August 6 at the Church Stretton Festival, September 30 at the Swansea International Festival, and November 30 at Bromsgrove Concerts in Worcestershire.

Huw Watkins describes his new composition:

“The instrumental combination of clarinet, violin, cello and piano was made famous by Messiaen with his Quartet for the End of Time, but when I started composing my new piece, I had Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen (for clarinet, viola and piano) in the back of my mind. Schumann was interested in the “picturesque and the fanciful” but left no link to specific fairy tales. This was a similar starting point for me when writing these four varied fables.”
