World Premiere of Hannah Lash's Leander and Hero with The City of Tomorrow

The City of Tomorrow wind quintet gives the world premiere of Hannah Lash’s Leander and Hero on February 9 as part of the Yale University School of Music Faculty Artist Series. Composed for woodwind quintet, the work is inspired by the Greek legend of Leander and Hero. Lash explains that in her version:

Leander and Hero are cliffbirds who mate for life. Hero sits on eggs in the nest on the rocks while Leander fishes for food. Leander is killed in a violent storm at sea and does not return. Hero waits for him but when he does not come she leaves her nest to go look for him. She finds his body washed up by the waves. Like all birds who mate for life, she sits by his body, unwilling to leave his side even in death.

In addition to Leander and Hero, two other works by Lash receive their world premiere at the recital: Four Songs, a four movement work for soprano, double bass, harp and percussion, is performed by Molly Netter, Samuel Suggs, Hannah Lash and Jeff Stern, and violinist Jacob Ashworth and pianist Lee Dionne give the first performance of Lash’s complete Sonata for Violin and Piano.
