World Premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s Morgen und Abend at the Royal Opera House

On November 13, The Royal Opera House presents the world premiere of Georg Friedrich Haas’s new opera Morgen und Abend (Morning and Evening) in a production by acclaimed British opera director Graham Vick. Award-winning Norwegian author, poet and playwright Jon Fosse provides the libretto, an adaptation of his 2000 novel of the same name. Michael Boder leads the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, starring Austrian actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, baritone Christoph Pohl, and soprano Sarah Wegener.

Morgen und Abend tells the story of an old man who finds his world has drastically changed: he meets his wife and best friend, who have both passed away, and can no longer communicate with his beloved daughter. Gradually, he realizes that he, too, is dead. The opera marks the second collaboration with Haas and Fosse, who share an interest in depicting intense and fluctuating emotional states, as well as the interplay between light and dark. Haas sought to create otherworldly sound environments to explore the state of death that Brandauer’s character experiences, and looked to translate light into sound:

Of course we have no idea, no real idea, what will happen with us when we go from life to death. But we know some experiences of people who were very near to this, and they all speak about a strong light. And I transform this light into the opera.
