World Premiere of Frank Zappa's 200 MOTELS - The Suites with Los Angeles Philharmonic

On October 23, Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the highly anticipated world premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 MOTELS – The Suites. The performance, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, features a spectacular production directed by James Darrah with the Los Angeles Philharmonic supported by an enormous cast of actors, singers and musicians as well as the Los Angeles Master Chorale. After the Los Angeles premiere, the BBC Concert Orchestra performs the UK premiere at London’s Royal Festival Hall on October 29. Jurjen Hempel leads the performance in collaboration with the Southbank Sinfonia and the London Voices.

Scored for large orchestra, chorus, soprano, vocal soloists, narrator and rock rhythm section, 200 MOTELS - The Suites is the orchestral score upon which is based much of the soundtrack to Zappa’s 1971 surrealist film, 200 MOTELS. Original material for the piece was premiered in concert by Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1970 and also appeared in form on Zappa’s 1970 solo album Chunga’s Revenge, though his complete musical vision for 200 MOTELS was never fully realized during his lifetime. In a style true to Zappa’s creative freedom, 200 MOTELS - The Suites promises to be a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime event!
