World Premiere of Chaya Czernowin's Knights of the strange at 2015 Wien Modern Festival

On November 20, Chaya Czernowin’s new work for chamber ensemble, Knights of the strange, receives its world premiere with Ensemble PHACE as part of the 2015 Wien Modern Festival. Simeon Pironkoff leads the premiere, which takes place at the Wien Konzerthaus.

Knights of the strange was co-commissioned by Ensemble PHACE and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The work, with its title taken from a book Czernowin’s son created when he was a child, features a smaller work for two players embedded within the larger ensemble. Czernowin elaborates:

The piece Knights of the strange (Tutti) is a piece of musical poetry where a few words highlight the speculative and poetic connections between dreams, reality and reflection. The piece includes in it another piece: Knights of the strange (Duo). The Duo is like an independent plant, which comes from another climate inside the jungle of the tutti version… It is a piece where there is a real braiding between the groups of the instruments. It is a very close look at the smallest mechanisms of impulse and reaction and at how impulse and reaction, when faced with some random element, can take quite a surprising turn into an unexpected territory.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic gives the US premiere of Knights of the strange on March 1 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, led by Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla as part of the Philharmonic’s “Green Umbrella” Series.
