Gerard Schwarz and the Frost Symphony Orchestra Premiere Bernard Rands's Chant
Oct. 19, 2025
Gerard Schwarz led the Frost Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Chant by Bernard Rands on September 20 in a sold-out, season opening concert titled "Apotheosis" at the Frost School of Music's Gusman Concert Hall. Chant is the fifth of six commissions composed to honor the Frost School's centennary.
Dedicated to Gerard Schwarz and University of Miami’s Frost School of Music for their 100th anniversary, Chant is the third part of an orchestral triptych comprising Aura, Dream, and Chant. Robert Kirzinger, Director of Program Publications at the Boston Symphony, wrote this which aptly describes Chant: “Rands’s imaginative approach to instrumental color is usually the first characteristic mentioned by those familiar with his music, followed closely by the lyricism, both in a purely melodic arena and in the broader sense of an organically wending, linear continuity. The character and flexibility of the human voice is central to his musical thinking, extending to his instrumental works as well as his vocal works.”
