Works by Bernard Rands, Joseph Schwantner, and Pierre Jalbert In the Orchestral Repertory
Jan. 09, 2014

This month, several works by our Schott New York composers receive repeat performances throughout the US as they enter the repertory of professional and conservatory orchestras.
Beginning on January 27, the Cleveland Institute of Music hosts Bernard Rands as Composer-in-Residence. Rands hosts a symposium on his music and on January 29, Steven Smith leads the CIM Orchestra in a performance of his Danza Petrificada and Chains Like the Sea as part of the conservatory’s New Music Series. The concert takes place at CIM’s Kulas Hall in Cleveland, OH in celebration of the composer’s 80th birthday.
Joseph Schwantner’s New Morning for the World (Daybreak of Freedom) receives performances this month from both the Marin Symphony Orchestra and the South Benth Symphony Orchestra. Scored for narrator and orchestra, the work was commissioned for the Eastman Philharmonia Orchestra and features text by Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 19 and 21, narrator Noah Griffen joins the the Marin Symphony Orchestra in two performances led by Alasdair Neale in San Rafael, CA. At Indiana University's Southbend Auditorium, the South Bend Symphony Orchestra performs the work on January 20 under the direction of Dr. Marvin Curtis.
On January 26, conductor Jeffrey Domoto leads the Vermont Youth Orchestra in a performance of Pierre Jalbert’s Music of Air and Fire. Commissioned by the California Symphony, the premiere of Jalbert's vivid orchestral essay was led by Barry Jekowsky in 2007. The Vermonth Youth Orchestra's performance takes place at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts in Burlington, VT.
