US Premieres for Wolfgang Rihm with Sound Icon and Zephyros Winds

Several major works by Wolfgang Rihm receive their first American performances this month with Sound Icon in Boston and Zephyros Winds in New York.

On October 26 and 28, Boston’s Sound Icon presents a two-night festival celebrating the music of Wolfgang Rihm, including in the US premieres of Frage, for female voice and ensemble, and the triptych Pol-Kolchis-Nucleus. Sound Icon’s performance on October 26 at the Goethe-Institut Boston features a program of solo and chamber works, including Brahmsliebewalzer, for solo piano, Antlitz for violin and piano, and String Quartet No. 12, as well as In Nuce and Verzeichnung – Studie, both for viola, cello and double bass. Part two of the ensemble’s festival takes place on October 28 at Northeastern University’s Fenway Center with the American premieres of Frage and Pol-Kolchis-Nucleus.

Also this month, the distinguished Zephyros Winds give the US premiere of Rihm’s Quintet for Winds. The Quintet, a major recent addition to the wind quintet repertoire, was commissioned by the Lucerne Festival and premiered by the Ensemble Wien-Berlin in 2003. The premiere takes place on October 27 at the CUNY Graduate Center’s Elebash Hall as part of the Music in Midtown concert series.
