Weill’s <em>Lady in the Dark</em> – Symphonic Nocturne in Lexington and Belgium

Lady in the Dark, Kurt Weill’s innovative 1941 hit musical, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin and a book by Moss Hart, has been called “the musical of the moment” in Germany, where a critically acclaimed stage production of this “intelligent and sparkling Weill jewel” (Die Welt) concludes a 5-month run at Staatsoper Hannover with performances on March 3, 7, 21 and April 8.

Highlights from Weill’s score will also be presented in March when the Lexington Philharmonic and the Brussels Philharmonic each performs Symphonic Nocturne from Lady in the Dark, a jazzy concert suite arranged by master Broadway orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett. Beginning with the haunting melody of “My Ship”, the suite features the classic songs “Girl of the Moment,” “This is New” and “The Saga of Jenny,” as well as dance music. Scott Terrell leads the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky on March 23 in an American-inspired program, and Fabian Gabel conducts the Brussels Philharmonic on March 29 in Brussels, March 30 in Bruges, and March 31 in Ghent in a program that also features Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, with Marianne Faithful as Anna I.
