Wealth of Performances This Month Captures a Wide Array of Holiday Music from Schott/EAM
Dec. 01, 2010
Preparations for December concerts are well underway as holiday music makes its annual return to orchestras and ensembles throughout the country. Audiences near and far will hear an expansive assortment of holiday offerings from Schott/EAM in countless performances this season including: select Christmas arrangements from Gary Fry; Lee Hoiby’s A Christmas Carol; music from the animated film The Polar Express by Alan Silvestri; Robert Shaw and Robert Russell Bennett’s beloved Many Moods of Christmas suites and more. Check out the performance calendar on www.eamdllc.com to see if you can catch a performance near you.
Gary Fry: Select Christmas Arrangements-Gary Fry’s long-admired Christmas arrangements include A Child’s Christmas in Wales; O come, O come Emmanuel; O Holy Night and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Fry’s Emmy-Award winning work as a composer, arranger, producer, and educator has earned him multiple premieres throughout the last decade with ensembles including the Chicago and Dallas Symphony Orchestras. This winter season proves to be no less popular for his works as they are performed in multiple venues throughout New York, California, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Alabama, New Jersey, and Florida.
Lee Hoiby: A Christmas Carol-The Chicago Symphony and conductor Duaine Wolfe perform beloved American composer Lee Hoiby’s A Christmas Carol on December 17-23 as part of the Symphony’s annual Welcome Yule! concert series. In addition to performances from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the week of holiday concerts will include performances from over 20 Chicago-based youth and high school ensembles.
Alan Silvestri: Music from The Polar Express-Composer Alan Silvestri, known for his film scores for Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Abyss, The A-Team and others, sees an array of selections from his score to the blockbuster 2004 film The Polar Express performed throughout the United States and Canada this month. The theme song Polar Express and his Suite from the Polar Express receive performances from The Cleveland Orchestra, Omaha Symphony, Ontario’s Windsor Symphony Orchestra, in addition to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Spirit of the Season also from the film.
Robert Shaw and Robert Russell Bennett: The Many Moods of Christmas-The four-part worldwide holiday favorite Many Moods of Christmas arranged by Robert Russell Bennett and Robert Shaw, has a performance geography that spans from Taipei to Tallahassee and everywhere in between. San Diego, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Tacoma Symphonies are just four of dozens of additional performances scheduled for the holiday concert season. Many Moods of Christmas is available on CD on the RCA Victor (recorded 1963 with Robert Shaw Chorale) and Telarc (stereo version recorded 1983 with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus) labels.
Nigel Hess: A Christmas Overture-Nigel Hess’ invigorating seven-minute A Christmas Overture returns to the repertoire for the holidays in 2010, only two years after it was featured on commissioner John Rutter’s latest holiday album, A Christmas Festival. In addition to its album debut in 2008 under the Collegium label, A Christmas Overture was featured in programs of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of London Sinfonietta that same year. The work is scheduled for a number of performances throughout England and the United States this winter.
