Vijay Iyer's Asunder Debuts with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

On October 12, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra gives the world premiere of Asunder, a new work for chamber orchestra by Vijay Iyer. The concert takes place at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, NE and kicks off a tour of performances in Danville, KY (October 14), West Lafayette, IN (October 15), and Newark, NJ (October 22), culminating in the New York premiere at Carnegie Hall on October 26.

In Asunder, Iyer sought to explore possibilities of unity in the orchestra as a response to feelings of fracture in the world at large, working against fragmentation "to imagine unity anew." He writes:

I can't tell you how to feel with this piece, but I can tell you how I felt while writing it, which is essentially how it feels to call oneself American today: pulled apart, broken, anxious, untethered... My hope is that this piece might, at least for its duration, serve to unify the bodies in the room—an experience that is hard to find today, and one that might stay with you until tomorrow.

Earlier this season, ECM Records released a new album by the Vijay Iyer Sextet, Far From Over. The record constitutes Iyer's fifth release on the label since 2014.
