Wien Modern Occupies Europe
Nov. 01, 2011

From October 28 to November 25, the annual Wien Modernfestival assumes the center of the contemporary music world in Europe. This year’s Vienna festival promises a cornucopia of new music from many Schott/EAM composers, a focus on British music with its "UK Collection" series, and a spotlight on home-grown Austrian masters with world premieres by Friedrich Cerha and Johannes Maria Staud. Composers featured include Thomas Adès, Luke Bedford, George Benjamin, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Jonathan Harvey, Oliver Knussen, György Ligeti and Matthias Pintscher.
Over four weeks, Wien Modern spans an arch of sound comprising the latest musical developments across 14 different venues around Vienna. Austria and Britain assume the focus of this year's festival, which explores not only the differences, but also the similarities in the musical developments of both countries and their composers. Austria's grand seigneur Friedrich Cerha and his magnum opus Spiegel I-VII kicked off the proceedings on October 28 in a performance by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Cornelius Meister.
