US Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's SKOTEINÓS with Ekmeles Vocal Ensemble; World Premiere of CON PIANO? CERTO! with Badische Staatskapelle

Ekmeles, New York City’s premiere contemporary vocal ensemble, joins musicians from TILT Brass to present the US premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s SKOTEINÓS on June 29 at the DiMenna Center. Directed by Jeffrey Gavett, the concert is part of the Five Boroughs Music Festival and focuses on works for the unique instrumentation of voice and brass ensemble.

Scored for three male voices and three trombones, the work was premiered by the Composers Slide Quartet with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart in February of 2008 in Germany. Composers Slide Quartet went on to perform SKOTEINÓS in Germany and Austria in 2009 and 2010. The text incorporates passages of ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus translated by Bruno Snell, and requires the three male voices to utilize percussion instruments throughout the piece.

June 23 marks the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Rihm, sprightly titled CON PIANO? CERTO!, with the Badische Staatskapelle conducted by Justin Brown and with Frank Dupree as piano soloist at the Grosses Haus Karlsruhe in Germany. CON PIANO? CERTO! follows his Piano Concerto No. 2 from 2014 which recently received its US premiere in January with Christoph Eschenbach and the National Symphony Orchestra.
