US Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's <em>Piano Concerto No. 2</em> with Tzimon Barto and The National Symphony Orchestra

Wolfgang Rihm’s Piano Concerto No. 2 receives its US premiere on January 15 and 17 with The National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Christoph Eschenbach conducts with Tzimon Barto, the work’s dedicatee, as soloist. The NSO co-commissioned Rihm’s concerto along with Salzburger Festspielfonds and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, who performed the world premiere with Maestro Eschenbach and Tzimon Barto at the Salzburg Festival in August 2014.

Rihm has written several concertos in his prolific compositional career, including orchestral concertos for viola, string quartet, piano trio, and a concerto grosso for 16 players. In tackling the traditional piano concerto form, Rihm states:

If we take a closer look at the “traditional” piano concertos, we find that each has its own form. And that is precisely what attracts me – to create something taking its own shape while remaining within a formal continuity.

Following the January performances in Washington, DC, Eschenbach and Barto return to Europe for performances of the work with the Münchner Philharmoniker on March 26 and 27.
