US Premiere of Vykintas Baltakas's <em>Redditio</em> with Seattle Modern Orchestra

The Seattle Modern Orchestra opens its 2016-2017 season on November 3 with a unique program featuring the US premiere of Vykintas Baltakas’s Redditio, for chamber ensemble, led by conductor Julia Tai. The program also features a performance of Wolfgang Rihm’s Chiffre II (Silence to be beaten). Both works recontextualize ideas from earlier works in the composers’ catalogues, and also incorporate musical gestures from older musical traditions.

Redditio draws on Baltakas’s earlier work, Ri, for soprano and electronics. Baltakas freely rethought, re-interpreted and commented on Ri throughout the expanded Redditio, extending all of the musical parameters (color, harmony, space and density) until "a new work separated itself from the source."

Rihm’s Chiffre II continues in the trajectory set in his Chiffre I. The piece is characteristic for its sudden, eruptive gestures, continuously moving between highly dramatic moments and repeated episodes of silence.
