US Premiere of There Will Be Blood Live-to-Projection with Wordless Music Orchestra
Sep. 08, 2014

On September 19 and 20, the Wordless Music Orchestra hosts the US Premiere of There Will Be Blood, a screening of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2007 acclaimed film alongside a live performance of the score. Conductor Ryan McAdams leads the ensemble through the film’s score, which contains music of Arvo Pärt, Johannes Brahms and Jonny Greenwood. The performances take place at the historic United Palace Theatre in New York City and feature Greenwood performing on ondes martenot. The first screenings took place in early August at The Roundhouse in London, where Hugh Brunt conducted the London Contemporary Orchestra.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Greenwood and Anderson reflect on their approach to scoring the film:
[Greenwood]: We talked about how The Shining had lots of Penderecki in it. We figured the instruments should be contemporary to the turn of the last century, but not period music. Even though you know the sounds you're hearing are coming from very old technology, you can do things with the classical orchestra that unsettle you, that are slightly wrong, that have some kind of slightly sinister undercurrent.
[Anderson]: I guess when you have a title like [There Will Be Blood], the music better be a little bit scary.
Also forthcoming are the world and US premieres of Greenwood’s new orchestral work, Water, which take place on October 2 and April 10 respectively. The piece, commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, is scored for two flutes, amplified upright piano, chamber organ/sampler keyboard, two tanpura (a plucked string instrument which traditionally provides a drone accompaniment in Indian music) and string orchestra.
